AKA Supports Juvenile Asthma Camps

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will fund the Juvenile Asthma Camps at Delta College for 2012 and 2013. The cost of both camps is about $7,000.

The asthma camp is hosted annually by St. Mary’s of Michigan and Delta College Respiratory Program. It is a free, one-day experience for 100 children ages 6 to 12 years old who have been diagnosed with asthma.

Asthma disproportionately affects low-income, minority children — a population that has few outlets for parents to become informed about the disease and how to manage it. Reaching this population is the core mission of AKA’s Asthma Prevention and Management Initiative.

The purpose of the camp is to provide an opportunity for children to learn about asthma. The camp facilitates interaction with other children who also have asthma in a fun and safe environment. The camp supervisors are registered respiratory therapists and the mentors are second-year Delta College respiratory therapy students.

“Collaborations are key to our effectiveness,” said Joyce Glover, president of the Mu Alpha Omega Chapter (Midland). “Our successful collaboration with KidDomain enabled us to raise the funds to support the Juvenile Asthma Initiative, and now our collaboration with Delta College and St. Mary’s of Michigan enables us to have the impact in the Tri-Cities that we desire. The sorority has embarked upon a national multi-year campaign, 2010 to 2014, to educate and enlighten the community about how to manage asthma through its Asthma Prevention and Management Initiative.”

Glover said Mu Alpha Omega and Eta Upsilon Omega (Saginaw) have combined resources to address the issue in Midland, Saginaw and Bay counties.
