Alpha Kappa Alpha Community Award Recipient

Harriet G. Jarmon, who was recently selected as this year's recipient of the annual Alpha Kappa Alpha Community Award, will officially be receiving her award on June 9, 2012. The award recognizes one individual for each category, and chapter members submit nominations of those that they feel embody the spirit of the organization's charter members.

“I was very surprised and humbled to know I had been nominated for this award and to know that I would be the first recipient of this prestigious award in my educational content field,” Jarmon said. “It's always encouraging knowing that people really do observe what educators teach and the impact we make in the lives of our students.”

Jarmon holds an Associate's Degree in Arts with an emphasis in Applied Piano Performance, a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from the University of Alabama, a Master's Degree in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix, and a PhD in Education with an emphasis in Secondary and Adult Education from Capella University. Having over twelve years classroom experience, Jarmon teaches middle school vocal music for grades 6-8. She hosts district music festivals and competitions and school and community concerts as well. She's also directed church community choirs within the Colorado Springs area. In the future, she hopes to get into higher education or school administration. Jarmon has been recognized as a National Children's Choir Distinguished Participant, National Youth Choir Distinguished Participant, Colorado Representative at Carnegie Music Festival, and was nominated for the Disney Teacher of the Year Award in 2006.
